Quickies
Pruning Rules of Thumb : Evergreens are best pruned when actively growing, Spring Bloomers are best pruned in Fall, Summer Bloomers are best pruned early Spring.
Slugs: This Bud's for You ! Slugs in your garden ? Bury small saucers flush within your mulch or soil, add a small amount of beer in the saucers. The yeast in the beer attracts the slugs, when they go to the edge for a quick drink they fall in and drown. Sounds primitive ...but it works !
Clay or Plastic ?
When planting in clay pots as opposed to plastic pots remember to water more often as clay pots absorb more moisture thus taking away from your plantings.
Grubs: Grubs eat the roots of your lawn therefor causing destruction of your turf. Moles enjoy dining on grubs so neither is a welcome guest. A simple test for grubs: Cut and peel back small patches of your turf around mid August, if you find 10-15 grubs per square foot heavy damage is near, it's time to start controlling them.
Lawn seeding and overseeding: When seeding a new lawn use 4 - 5pounds of seed per 1000 sq.ft. When overseeding an existing lawn use 2 - 3 pounds of seed per sq.ft.
Weed Barriers: When preparing a new planting bed be sure to choose a good quality weed barrier to keep your weeding chores to a minimum. Fiber type barriers are a little more expensive than the typical "Black Plastic" but they do a wonderful job of letting light, water and air get to your plantings while stopping the toughest weeds from popping through. "Black Plastic" can develope punctures (Especially when used under decorative rock) thus letting weeds pop up in your planting beds.
Death by Drowning: If you have a wet or low spot in your lawn or planting area and everything that's planted there seems to die from too much water, try this....dig the hole 3-4" deeper and add some gravel to the bottom before planting. This keeps the roots close enough to water yet not drowning.
Tired of mowing that slope ? Try planting ground cover, low growing junipers make excellent ground cover plants and far less maintainance than grass !
